I love a highlighter, no matter what look I am trying I will always use a highlighter as I feel like it just completes your makeup look.
But with so many to choose from, where do you start?
There are a few things to consider.
What is your skin type?
Are you after a liquid, cream or a powder and do you want your shimmer to be a natural glow or more intense?
A liquid highlighter is packed with more pigment so will always give you a higher shine vs a powder. A powder will give you a more natural glow and is easier to manage as you can add more if you prefer.
Where should you highlight?
Technically you can highlight anywhere but I particularly love to add to my cheekbones, brow bones and my cupids bow. If I have my shoulders on show I also like to add a little glow to there too!
What colour should I go for?
They tend to fall into different categories – you have the more silver pearl tones which is best for fair skin and then for warmer tones choose the highlights in colours such as champagne and bronze. For a darker complexion go for a gold toned highlight to really pop.
Here are just a few of my tried and tested favourite highlighters.
For an intense shine
I LOVE a glow, so I am all about the more highlight the better!
For an intense glow I always reach for my Illamasqua Beyond Liquid Highlighter in shade OMG. Its not a cheap highlighter but you only need a small amount so well worth the investment. Use before your powder for intense shine.
If you’re looking for a powder that’s offering the same super shine, look no further than Doll Beauty, hugely pigmented they offer a range of different shades, my favourite is the Shine Bright.
Use a small rounded brush to add a pop of highlight onto the end of your nose for that super snatched look.
For a natural glow
If you’re not sure if highlighter is for you or you’re looking for more of a daytime glow Mac Mineralise Skin Finish is my go-to in shade Soft and Gentle. This is perfect for that subtle glow and to complete your daytime makeup look.
For a liquid natural glow their Strobe Cream has always been a favourite of mine, mix in with your foundation or used alone this adds a subtle glowy highlight to your skin.
My favourite go to shade is Peachlite, especially on summer sun-kissed skin.
Purse friendly highlight
I never seem to be able to go makeup shopping without purchasing a highlighter as there are so many amazing budget friendly highlighters out there that do the job really well!
So, if you don’t want to spend too much money or you’re unsure what it is you are after I suggest you try a few of my favourites below.
